You need a substantial amount of money to ensure constant growth and subsequently retain it.It is often quite a cumbersome task to find additional capital for your enterprise. You can resolve this problem by bringing more investors to your business. What kind of investor you would like to take help from? There are âtraditional investorsâ who lend you money in return for an agreed profit. But, they also actively participate in routine business activities. Therefore, you may prefer signing a partnership contract with a âsilent partner.âAs the name suggests, this type of investor literally keeps quite. He does not bother spending time with the business owners or helping them run their business, as long as he is getting the profit.People often hesitate to invest in a business because of the associated risks. You never know what is going to happen next. You can win a jackpot if the business meets with massive success.Or, you could lose millions if it is a total failure.More importantly, why would anybody invest in your business when he has no control over business operations.Needless to say, it is a very difficult task to find a silent partner. The person who somehow agrees to become a silent partner deserves special treatment and extra profit. However, the silent partnership can be a very rewarding business deal. It can offer you a greater profit than stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.People, in fact, have started to realize the true potential of investing silently in a business. You may decide against borrowing money from a silent partner, considering the significant amount of money you have to pay him in return. However, you will not have to face problems associated with regular investors in the case of a silent partner.First of all, you will get the money you need. Secondly, you will be fully in control of your business and answerable to nobody. Thirdly, there will be no unnecessary interference from anyone and you will be free to make decisions as you see fit.WHO IS A SILENT PARTNER?A silent partner is an investor who contents on receiving the fixed profit. He does not usually participate in the executive board or investors meetings. He has no role to play in the daily operations of the business. In simple words, the silent partner literally remains silent and does not actively become a part of the companyâs management team.He is also only liable for the money he has provided to the business and nothing more. Therefore, such a partner is also referred to as a limited partner. You can always consult a limited partner and seek help whenever necessary. He cannot provide any type of support otherwise solicited. The guidance and support can include acting as an arbitrator in the case of any conflict between the main business partners and providing crucial business contacts to develop the business.Limited partners never come to the forefront and always w ork quietly. They are expected to accept the decisions of the general partners and cede any type of control if they have any.Similarly, they should also have full confidence in the general partners ability to successfully control and grow the enterprise. It is also their responsibility to determine if all the partners have had compatible corporate vision and management style.LiabilitiesSilent partners are mostly liable for two things. The first one is any monetary loss which equals their invested sum of money. Secondly, they are also liable for any role or responsibility they might have assumed during the process of launching a business. Both these things make limited partnership one of the most favorable and profitable types of investment. You literally have to do nothing. You are not liable for anything either, but you still have a sizable stake in a growing business. The Secret Partners? The identity of a silent partner is well and truly known to people both inside and outside the orga nization despite the fact that they donât have any active role in business undertakings. On the contrary, no one knows the identity of a secret investor or partner. As a result, he can participate in business operations while maintaining full anonymity. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SILENT PARTNER AND THE INVESTORNow it is time to explain the difference between a silent partner and a traditional investor in detail. There are in fact a number of things which distinguish a silent partner from all other types of investors. These factors may include things like his role in the operations, relation with the business owners, the level of feedback he is entitled to give and the rate of profit. The following lines elaborate all these points one by one. Silent Partner Has No Role to Play in Business OperationsThe general investor fully participates directly in business operations while the silent one does not. This is also the biggest difference between these two types of investors. The general i nvestor has a greater role to play in routine business matters and decisions in addition to investing money. A silent partner will only invest money in the business. He has nothing else to do. He normally does not concern himself with what is going on in the company he has invested in.It is better for you to look for a traditional investor if you want constant advice and guidance in addition to extra capital. On the other hand, a silent partner is a better choice if you are already running a successful business, but need more cash to sustain growth. No FeedbackTraditional investors expect you to consult them whenever you have any problem. Similarly, they are always willing to lend their support. In complete contrast, the silent partner relies on the decisions and management of the existing partners. They minimize their feedback and give no input regarding how to manage the enterprise.Once again, you should bring a quiet partner if your only goal is acquiring more money for the business, without any extra feedback.Active investors are a good bet if you want both the money as well as active feedback and advice to attain your next business goal.Main Difference is TrustWhy would anybody give you a large sum of money without having any say in business decisions? This will only happen when both of you know and trust each other.Maybe you already had a great experience working with each other. Maybe he is your intimate friend. You can also attract more investors to your business if you have recently completed a successful project. You develop a less formal relationship with a limited partner because you have greater trust in each other. It will be easier and less frustrating for you to build a company if you manage to find a silent partner right in the beginning. However, it is easier said than done. While you can find âactiveâ partners without much trouble, it is a challenging task to find a silent one. Both are InvestorsDespite a lot of difference between them, a true sil ent partner is always an investor. He only wants higher profits compared to traditional investors due to the nature of the partnership. For instance, a person has to invest a huge amount of money for this type of partnership agreement to work. Therefore, it is relatively easier to find traditional partners in the current business environment. An Active Investor Has Greater LiabilityActive investors are fully involved in the day to day business affairs and therefore, they have a greater liability than their silent counterparts. You may consult silent partners for direction and advice from time to time, but they mostly remain out of the picture. As a result, they are not liable for anything happening inside your company. However, they can agree on a limited-liability partnership. In this case, they will be protected from all kinds of lawsuits in spite of having a greater influence on the business than the active partners.Traditional Investors are More HelpfulTraditional investors provide yo u with valuable advice, guidance, and counsel whenever you have a problem at hand or you want to make a plan for your next move. Some investors also leverage their own relations and influence in the market to help your business grow and prosper. In some cases, they pitch in and start working as a full member of your management team. Unfortunately, you cannot receive such type of support from a limited partner.Specify Roles in the AgreementYou must specify the roles of all types of business investors in the agreement. For instance, you can offer a greater role in the organization to active investors. The equity structure or the agreement should clearly mention what role you want your partners to play. Do you just need their money or you also need their advice, influence, and contacts?Different Rates of ProfitIt is always a risk to invest in a business, especially when you cannot contribute to business operations and decisions. It is obvious that a limited investor wants a considerably hi gher return on his investment because he takes this risk.On the contrary, a general investor relies on your abilities to generate profit for him after he lends you the money.Silent Investors are not Readily AvailableIt is very difficult to find silent partners, to say the least. They do not exist in the real world unless you can find one within your family, friends or close contacts.Family members, especially your parents and siblings will continue to love you even if you recklessly waste their money. However, it also varies from family to family. While extravagant use of money does not bother some families, others are more penny-pinching and hold you accountable for every penny you spend.Furthermore, you live in a fools paradise to think that the silent partners will remain silent. They constantly speak and they have every right to do so.After all, it is their money you are squandering. Therefore, you need to spend the money wisely in order to avoid any conflict with your partners.HO W TO FIND A SILENT INVESTOR?How do you convince someone to invest money in your business without having any control over it?There are only 3 ways to bring a partner without having to face legal problems as well as securities and exchange registration issues of your respective country. The following is a detailed explanation of each of these methods.1. Make Him a True Business PartnerAlmost all the experts recommend signing a true investor agreement with a limited partner. This type of agreement offers many benefits, including no interference from the SEC.Similarly, your business partner will have the right to receive profit from you. You can also keep a lot of legal issues at bay. Most importantly, you will have an experienced partner at your disposal in case you need any help and advice. There is one major drawback of bringing money partners as general investors. They will exercise greater control over your business. They will also contribute to business decisions and voting. You also c annot treat them as a true silent partner. In fact, you should never utter this word in front of them less you want to face their wrath. You can achieve one objective by treating them as active investors. They cannot complain about anything if something ever goes wrong. For instance, when you constantly inform them about every business matter and make them a part of the decision-making process, they become equally liable and responsible for any business failure. This type of agreement has another minor drawback. Since money partners are actively participating in business matters, you have to legitimately address their concerns as well. The initial agreement of the partnership should clearly state that they are only business partners. They have actual ownership of the business. You are not taking any loan, nor there is any interest rate.2. Agree on a Fixed Rate of ReturnThe Lenders agreement can be extremely beneficial for both parties. Lenders are less likely to lose money if you agree on a fixed profit in the contract.Similarly, you do not have to follow their instructions and advice, address their concerns and redress their grievances if you bring them as a lender only. The lenders agreement is the ideal choice if you do not want to get into any legal trouble, but also need a limited partner for your business. But, they must agree on a fixed rate of return without raising any hue and cry.If there is no legal way for a lender to earn profit from your business, he can register a claim with the SEC, the very issue you wanted to avoid in the first place if you somehow lose his money. You can unintentionally transform limited partners to active business partners as well.In this case, they will share full responsibility and liability in addition to taking an active part in routine business affairs. However, your creditors can contact them directly to retrieve their money if they get the wind of your partnership. It is always imperative to write a solid promissory note befo re engaging yourself in any such partnership. The promissory note should always contain the following terms.Clearly mention the party lending the money and the party responsible to pay it back. The total amount of money loaned and the interest rate. When and how you are paying the loan back?Is there any penalty for repaying the loan before time? The penalty or consequences if the second party defaults or struggles to pay the loan back.3. Documenting an Investor Deal with the Securities and Exchange CommissionSigning a lender agreement is one of the best options if you only want to receive financial help from someone. However, many investors ask much more than just a fixed rate of return. They hate indulging in hectic business activities, yet they want to share the profits. In simple words, they demand an equity position in the business. If you come across any such money lender, it is imperative for you to document a proper investment deal with the SEC.If you are going to sign an investor d eal with any party or person, you need to take care of the following things.Always hire an experienced security attorney who knows all the ins and outs of the process.A highly qualified security attorney with years of professional experience will help you choose the best possible investment option for your business as well.It is also important for you to file a Form D with the Securities and Exchange Commission. A securities attorney will be a great help in this regard. You also have to file Form D in every state you want to sell the securities. Also, make sure that you fill and satisfy all the rules and regulations as well as their clauses and sub-clauses. It is literally impossible for a business owner to fully understand the process on his own. Therefore, you should never take this path without the assistance of an attorney who has all the knowledge and experience of this intricate process. CONCLUSIONAgainst common perception, it is never easy to have a silent partner for your busi ness. You have to meet so many conditions and satisfy so many rules.Hiring an experienced attorney will also cost you a lot of money. In fact, you have to at least spend $15000 to $20000 before you can get any money from a limited partner.Keeping all the above factors in mind, you have to decide whether or not you really need a silent partner for your business. You can go ahead and reach an agreement with a silent partner if you can afford to spend $20000 in terms of attorneys salary and initial filings. If not, it is better to bring on a conventional partner to your business. beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102899117870718523.post-30103309370373899122020-05-23T22:08:00.001-07:002020-05-23T22:08:04.444-07:00Better to Betray My Country and Not My Friend - 541 Words We as human beings all have choices. Many of the choices we make can affect us for the rest of our lives. Among the more important decisions a person will ever have to face is that of betrayal. Often times we are in a situation in which we must chose sides: ââ¬Å"Whom to betray?â⬠, and in this case, the options are friend or country. I agree with E. M. Forsterââ¬â¢s view on personal relations and patriotism, believing that ââ¬Å"I hope I should have the guts to betray my countryâ⬠(Forster) over my friend. A person should always ââ¬â and one might even say has a duty to ââ¬â place his conscience or the moral laws he has set for himself over any conflicting manmade law. She knew the only way her brother could receive respectful passage to an afterlife was if he received proper burial. Her religious beliefs and strong love did not allow her to remain passive and not act to help her brother. Antigoneââ¬â¢s moral standards obligated her to betray her country in order to help her brother. For these reasons, Antigone was justified in breaking the law and betraying her country. There are, however, situations in which betraying oneââ¬â¢s country is unjustified. When a person or group violently and disrespectfully breaks a law, such as the Weather Underground did in their protest of the lack of attention being given to the Vietnam War, their actions are unjustified. Now let us distinguish between an unjust action and an unjust cause. The Weathermen were in my opinion morally justified to go against the government and protest the war in Vietnam (obviously protest is very different than betrayal, but for the sake of an example â⬠¦). This was their morally justified cause. By bombing buildings and bashing glass, they proceeded to act unjustly and were at fault. Nevertheless, the Weather Underground was right in placing their personal beliefs over their country. Women were not seen in the past as they are seen now. They were seen as the weaker, less knowledgeable sex. They had to listen to their husbands and they had no say in anything. We are reminded of this when we read The Yellow Wallpaper. Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an activist for womens rights. With this being said, I believe Gilmans purpose for writing The Yellow Wallpaper was to show the readers women do have rights, this is a changing world, and women dont have to listen to everything their husband or significant other tells them to do. She does this by the narrator symbolically seeing herself trapped inside the wallpaper and her eventually pulling the wallpaper off the wall and being able to feel free to do whatever she wants. In Monumental feminism and literatures ancestral house: Another look at ?The Yellow Wallpaper Janice Haney-Peritz, Department of English (Beaver College), states, As a memorial, ?The Yellow Wallpaper is used to remind contemporary readers of the enduring import of the feminist struggle against patriarchical domination; while as a boundary marker, it is used to demarcate the territory appropriate to a feminist literary criticism (114). Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Yellow Wallpaper Janice Haney-Peritz" essay for you Create order There are several scenes/instances throughout this story that show that John sees the narrator, his wife, as being less than he is. These instances are: when the narrator says that she is forbidden to work until she is well again, John treats the narrator like a child, John makes her lie down for an hour after each meal, the narrator states that she doesnt want to irritate her husband, and at the end of the story where she says, Ive got out at last in spite of you and Jane and Ive pulled off most of the paper, so you cant put me back (Gilman). First, the narrator says that she is forbidden to work until she is well again. She doesnt actually work, but she likes to write. I guess back in that time women always listened to their husband and didnt do anything that the husband didnt want them to do. It was easy to tell that the narrator was trying to rebel because she would write whenever she could as long as no one saw her. It seemed as if the more it went into the story the less she cared about what Jennie or John thought or wanted her not to do. Second, John treats his wife (the narrator) like a child. He does this in several ways. He decides that she will stay in a room that was once a nursery; although, it also sounds like it might have housed a crazy person (i.e. bars on the windows, the bed is nailed down, rings in the walls, the wallpaper is torn). However, this is also a form of dramatic irony because the story talks about all these features, but keeps saying it was at one time a nursery. During the story he calls her a couple names that sound as if he thinks of her as a child (i.e. blessed little goose, little girl). At one point, he says, Bless her little heart (Gilman). In addition, he constantly throughout the story tells her what she can and cannot do. Third, the story states that John makes the narrator lie down for an hour after every time she eats. Apparently, the story is showing that John has control over her or at least it seems to imply that he does. I was a little confused because I kept thinking how can someone make another person lie down. Unless, that person has a gun to the other persons head it doesnt seem very plausible that the person could make the other one lie down. Also, if John was out of the house all day and if the narrator ate without Jennie being around then how would anyone know if she slept or not for an hour after she ate? Fourth, in one scene the narrator says that she doesnt want to irritate her husband. This shocked me big time. I know back in the time when this story was written that women obeyed their husband and wanted to make their husband happy. I guess in this day and age people have become selfish because I dont believe I know a single woman who wouldnt do something just because they didnt want to irritate their husband. Finally, there is the scene at the end of The Yellow Wallpaper where the narrator finally rips the wallpaper off the wall showing that she is finally free from oppression. This scene alone is a major part in the story to show that Gilmans purpose for writing the story was to show that women have rights too. The narrator wants to have power over her husband for once so she locks the door, throws the key down on the front path, and then later makes him retrieve the key to be able to get in the room. Once John comes home, the narrator calls him young man and tells him that he cant get in without retrieving the key. She now has power over him. She has a rope that she might use to kill herself if her plan to get free doesnt work. Her husband faints when he gets inside because once he sees the wallpaper torn off the walls he realizes that his wife is not getting better and, in turn, is actually worse. John realizing that his wife is actually getting worse instead of better is an example of situational irony because what is happening is the opposite of what he intended or thought was happening. At the end of the story she says, Ive got out at last in spite of you and Jane and Ive pulled off most of the paper, so you cant put me back (Gilman). I think Jane is herself. All throughout the story she feels physically trapped because she cant do things for or by herself. Also, she feels symbolically trapped because she sees herself trapped behind the wallpaper, but I think once she pulled it off the walls that she felt liberated. Furthermore, she feels like she has gotten free because she has stood up to her husband and herself. She decides that she will no longer be oppressed, feel like she is weak, and feel like she cant do things just because she is a woman and seen as the weaker, less knowledgeable sex. I think (in this scene) Gilman was trying to show that we can accomplish anything if we put our mind to it and that we dont need anyone elses approval. Although, this isnt actually talked about in those scenes there are various other forms of irony and symbolism throughout the story that show the narrator is less than equal to John and that she just goes along with whatever he says and tells her to do. In the story, it says that her husband laughs at her; however this is something someone expects to happen when they are married. This is a form of verbal irony because no one expects or should expect that their husband would laugh at them. Why would anyone want to be married to someone that laughs at them? She is being sarcastic when she says this. Also, in another scene the narrator states that she is happy that her case isnt severe. This is a form of verbal irony because her case is the exact opposite of what she says. It is severe. However, at the end of the story where the John faints from seeing the wallpaper has been pulled off is a bit different. The tables have turned and now she is in power and John has fainted and is lying on the floor while she is creeping over him so this is situational irony. The wallpaper is a major symbol in this story. Gilman uses the wallpaper as a symbol to show how life used to trap women in their roles as a wife. At first, when I read the story I just thought that the narrator was crazy. I didnt like the story and wasnt sure what I was supposed to get from it. However, I smiled after reading it a second time. After all of this has been said, I hope it shows how and why Gilmans purpose for writing this short story was to show the readers women do have rights, this is a changing world, and women dont have to listen to everything their husband or significant other tells them to do. I am so glad that time has changed and that we no longer have to live in a society where women are not seen as equals. beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102899117870718523.post-18857194682444481702020-05-06T12:54:00.001-07:002020-05-06T12:54:18.924-07:00Growing Fungi and Bacteria of Plants Free Essays Introduction There are both virulent and non-virulent bacteria and fungi that grow on plants. It is difficult to distinguish between the two without proper inspection and diagnosis of the diseased plant to know whether the bacteria or the fungus in question is the virulent or non-virulent one. Therefore pure cultures need to be isolated to know with absolute certainty which is the causative bacteria or fungus. We will write a custom essay sample on Growing Fungi and Bacteria of Plants or any similar topic only for you Order Now Potato dextrose agar is a good nutrient agar for mycelia to thrive on which is present in most fungal moulds. Standard nutrient agar is a general utility used for non-fastidious microorganisms. 2 Aim The aim is to isolate fungi and bacteria colonies from diseased and healthy leaves. Materials and Methods Materials used for the experiment was two of each: standard nutrient agar plate and potato dextrose agar plate. To remove any epiphytic or saprophytic microbes from the plant surface the leaf is superficially sterilized with 100% ethanol. A scalpel to cut the leaf Sterile water for macerating the leaves. To isolate the fungi: Cut 5 pieces of leaf from the diseased leaf around the edges of the diseased area so it contains both healthy and diseased parts, place it on the one potato dextrose agar plate. Then cut 5 pieces from the healthy leaf and place them on the second dextrose agar plates. To isolate bacteria: Macerate both the healthy and diseased leaves separately in the sterile water and streak it onto the two separate standard nutrient agar plate. Incubate all four plates at 25? C for up to 7 days. Discussion There is growth on both the healthy and diseased agar plates for both bacteria and fungi. For the healthy fungal plate there is a single type of growth which suggests that it is a natural non-pathogenic fungus that grows on plants. On the diseased plants there are 5 different colonies of fungus from the 5 different pieces of leaves. The one area has a clear zone where the fungus has inhibited the growth of the other colonies. On the healthy bacterial plate there is some bacterial growth which can also suggest non-pathogenic bacteria that grows on plants. On the diseased plant bacterial plate there is some bacterial growth but not a lot and still fungal growth. Conclusion The lack of bacterial colonies on the bacterial plate and the fungal growth on the same plate suggests that the disease on the plant is caused by a fungal pathogen and not a bacterial one. There are fungi and bacteria that grow on plants that are not harmful towards the plant. ? Answer: Introduction The purpose of this paper is to provide the nursing care plan for the 75 years old patient. The patient has suffered from stroke and also has right side paralysis. If, the stroke occurs in the left side of the brain then patient suffers from the problems occur on the right side of the body. This is the main reason of the right side paralysis. Stoke is considered as the major cause of mortality and morbidity in the older people. According to the definition stroke is a sudden disabling attack, caused by an interruption in the flow of blood to the brain, especially through thrombosis (Smith, 2014, p. 18). Stroke could cause the serious disabilities in the patient and can impact their social, physical and psychological functioning. Stroke also affects the cognitive functioning. Stroke can severely impact the quality of life and physical and psychological well-being of the patient. This paper will discuss the physical and psychological health assessment of the patient in order to indentif y the three priority nursing problems in case of Kevin. Paper will also provide the evidence based knowledge relate to three priority nursing problems and will also discuss the nursing care plan for addressing three main nursing problems. Health Assessment of the Patient According to the given case study, Kevin Jones is a 75 years old man, who lives alone on his farm situated in the rural area. His wife died13 years back and since then he has been living all alone. He has three grown up children, two of them live outside Victoria, while one lives nearby. However, his children are busy with their families and work life. He had been living independently and verbalized his wish to return to home and live independently. The patient has limited finances and a very old farmhouse that is not in very good condition. The past medical history of the patient displays that he had suffered from Prostate enlargement, hypertension, alcoholism, depression and anxiety. The problem of stroke can be associated with alcoholism and hypertension, because studies have shown that alcoholism can lead to brain damage and ultimately in stroke. Hypertension and alcoholism are the major risk factors that can lead to stroke. High blood pressure of hypertension is a disease, which is considered as a chronic illness. High blood pressure is also considered as the leading cause of stroke in older people. Hypertension can also impact the vital functions of the body. It can also lead to vision problems. Therefore, it can be said that people with hypertension are vulnerable to the risk of stroke. Hypertension is the condition, which the blood do not flow in the steady stream. Due to hypertension, Blood vessels can be damaged that can restrict the flow of blood to brain (Singh, Mensah, and Bakris, 2010). Since, the blood flo w is restricted, some parts of the brain do not get oxygen in enough amount and brain cells are damaged leading to stroke. Alcoholism is also a very important cause of stroke. Studies have shown that alcoholic people are more likely to suffer from stroke. From moderate to high consumption of alcohol can increase the risk of stroke (Cunningham et al, 2017). Kevin also has the history of alcoholism that may have contributed in stroke. The chronic and heavy intake of alcohol can result in causing many abnormalities in the blood. Alcohol misuse can result in many neurological disorders such as dementia, stroke and traumatic brain injury (Wadd et al, 2013). Alcoholism can also lead to cognitive impairment in older people, which can get worse over time. Cognitive impairments can be a significant problem for the older people that can affect their functionality, mobility. It can also lead to memory loss, lack of problem solving skills and disrupted behavior (Chen et al, 2010). Some of the common dysfunctions associated with stroke are depression, anxiety, motor, sensory, cognitive and communication disorders. Kevin has also displayed the problem with speech, his speech is slurred and he faces difficulty in speaking. This situation of the patient makes them dependent and also reduces their quality of life. Studies have also associated psychological distress with occurrence of stroke (Henderson et al, 2013). Evidences have shown that psychological distress, depression and anxiety can also lead to stroke. Kevin also has the history of depression and anxiety that increases the risk of stroke, as well as the age is also considered as the non-modifiable risk factor of stroke. . Therefore, according to medical history of the patients, all of his physical and psychological problems can be associated with occurrence of stroke. Slurred speech and swallowing problem are also considered as the consequences of stroke (Chen et al, 2010). The various complications occur due to the changes caused by stroke. The patient may have reduced mobility due to weakened body parts. According to the study, Common deficits after stroke include weakness, numbness, vision problems, slurred speech and swallowing problems, difficulties with language, balance and coordination problems, and problems with thinking (Donkor et al, 2014, p. 197). The four main issues in the given case study are the mobility impairment, ineffective coping, risk of impaired swallowing and impaired verbal communication. Nursing Diagnosis and 3 Important Nursing Problems Stroke patients have reduced quality of life, so the nursing care priorities are required to be focused on improving mental and physical capabilities of the patient. The three main nursing problems associated with the case of Kevin are impaired physical mobility, impaired verbal communication and impaired swallowing. Impaired Physical Mobility: Stroke is the chronic condition that has potential for causing many disabilities in the patients. Impaired physical mobility is one such risk factor that can be a great barrier for the quality of life of patient. Stroke results in inherent psychological alterations. Stroke results in reduced muscle strength, decrease tendon reflexes, as well as change in gait and difficulty in maintaining body balance (Costa et al, 2010). Impaired mobility is associated with physical limitation. Kevin wants to live in house, where he lives alone and has no one to care for him. Physical limitations can make him self-care deficit and socially excluded. The signals from the brain are not effectively sent to the muscles after stroke, because of the damage occurred in the brain. Therefore the patient also suffers from paralysis and develops spasticity. Presence of impaired physical mobility implies the change in balance and gait, which further increases the risk of falls, highe r dependency of the patient for activities of daily life and restraining the patient to resume back to normal life (Donkor et al, 2014). Impaired Verbal Communication: due to the damages in the brain the sensory and motor functions are reduced in the stroke patients. Patient suffers from impaired verbal communication and finds difficulty in specking. Due to this problem, Kevin feels agitated and display emotional outbursts. This problem can reduce his psychological and mental health. Therefore, it is very important to address this nursing issue that may impact quality of life of the patient, because the sudden onset of communication problem can affect and disrupt almost all aspects of life (Bronken et al, 2012). The post stroke communication problems results in ineffective verbal expression. According to a study of Left brain damage (LBD) may cause alterations in phonological, morphological, denotative semantic, and syntactic aspects (Gindri, G. and Fonseca, R.P., 2012, p. 364). The damage in the left side of the brain is called as Aphasia, which is a commonconsequenceof left hemispheric lesion and most common neurops ychological consequenceofstroke (Sinanovi? et al, 2011). The problem of Aphasia can also impact the psychological well-being of the patient. Impaired Swallowing: Impaired swallowing is also a post stroke consequence that can create nutritional imbalance in the patient and can also hamper their recovery. The problem if impaired swallowing is called as Dysphagia in the medical terms (Shaker and Geenen, 2011). This is the common clinical problem associated with stroke. The problem of swallowing also called as Post stroke dysphagia (PSD) is a complication that patient may face in the first few hours or for few days after stroke. Kevin has also displayed swallowing difficulties. This problem has significantly associated with increased rate of morbidity and mortality, because it can lead to malnutrition, pneumonia and aspiration (Cohen et al, 2016). According to the evidence provided in the study of Cohen eta al (2016), Dysphagia leading to aspiration of ingested foods, liquids, or oral secretions, is thought to be the primary risk factor for pneumonia after stroke (p. 399). This problem occurs due to the damage in the structur es of cortex and subcortical. Therefore, it is important to address this problem in case of Kevin for preventing further complications. Nursing Care Plan Nursing care plan for the patients is the most important aspect of care. It is designed according to specific individual needs and for obtaining desired outcomes. Nursing care plan for Kevin will focus on addressing the problems of impaired mobility, imp0aired verbal communication and impaired swallowing. Impaired Physical Mobility: Patient will be assessed regularly for evaluating the extent of impairment. This is important for developing the care plan accordingly. Indentifying the extent of impairment will also help in identifying the strength and deficiencies. Kevin will be encouraged to take part in light physical activities, like walking, gluteal exercise, squeezing rubber ball, extension of fingers and legs/feet. This will help in minimizing the muscle atrophy, will promote better blood circulation and will also help in preventing contractures (Costa et al, 2010). Impaired Verbal Communication: Improving verbal communication in patient is important for reducing the chances of psychological disruptions. Patient will be encouraged to talk slowly. Nurse will also ask simple question to patient, which can be answered as yes or no. This will help in reducing patients confusion and anxiety caused due to inability to communicate properly. Taking slowly and asking simple questions will help to reduce complexity of communication. Patient will also be referred to speech rehabilitation program (Gindri and Fonseca, 2012). Speech therapies will help patient to communicate their feelings and will reduce psychological distress (Brady et al, 2012). The speech and language therapist will help patient in communicating in an effective manner and will also help in reducing problem of aphasia. Impaired Swallowing: Impaired swallowing is neuromuscular impairment. The primary aim opf the dysphagia management is to reduce the problem of aspiration. The major aim is to manage the swallowing difficulties of the patient rather than rehabilitate the problem. Aspiration can be the significant problem. Another problem is that swallowing problem can result in malnutrition and can reduce patients weight leading to increased mortality and morbidity (Shaker and Geenen, 2011). The food provided to the patient will be modified. The amount of fluid will be increased that will help in reducing swallowing problem and will also address the problem on ineffective bowel movements. Patient will also be encouraged to change postures and changing swallowing techniques. Compensatory techniques can also be used for managing food and drink (Cohen et al, 2016). Conclusion Paper discussed the case study of Kevin Jones, who is a 75 years old man and had suffered stroke. Stroke is a serious neurological disorder that can restrict the functional ability, motor skills, physiological well-being and activities of daily life. It is very important o address the various functional issues for improving the quality of life. Kevin has been facing many psychological and physical problems occurred due to stroke. Therefore, paper discussed the detailed physical and psychological health assessment of the patient to determine the three priority nursing issues. The three nursing issues identified in the case of Kevin are impaired physical mobility, impaired verbal communication and impaired swallowing. The addressed issues are very important for Kevin because he wants to live independently and such impairments can restrict him from living an independent life. Paper also provides the three nursing interventions for addressing these problems. References Brady, M.C., Kelly, H., Godwin, J. and Enderby, P., 2012. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you plann'd: It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of thoughts that I once had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. I chose to write my poetry criticism on the sonnet "Remember" by Christina Rossetti. It was written in 1849 when Rossetti was just 19 years old. She is considered to be one of the foremost women poets of the 19th century Victorian period. In this sonnet the themes of love, death, and reaction to death are introduced. Christina Rossetti was born in London in 1830. She was the product of a wealthy family and was raised a pious Calvinist. She wrote about many themes ranging from love to the seasons of the year. She used little visual detail in her poetry. She let her ideas speak for themselves. She is sometimes incorrectly associated with the women's suffrage movement but she was happy with her place in life and furthermore said that Christianity and womens' rights were at odds. She spent the last 15 years of her life in seclusion and died in 1894 a well-known poet. This sonnet, "Remember", is written to a lover and is about their love, her death, and how she wants him to react to her death. The themes are alluded to throughout the poem. Lines 1-3 deal with the element of death. Lines 5 and 6 hint that Rossetti and her lover were to be married, showing their love for each other, and lines 9-14 are Rossetti's instructions that her lover move on with his life and not dwell on her death because she would rather he "...forget and smile...than remember and be sad". Rossetti uses a metaphor in line 1 when she states, "Remember me when I am gone away", the metaphor being gone away instead of the word dead. She uses another metaphor in line 2 where she writes, "Gone far away into the silent land", using the term the silent land instead of eternal life. The third metaphor is found in line 11, "For if the darkness and corruption leave", using darkness and corruption as a metaphor for anger at her death. Rossetti does not use many symbols in her poetry but in this poem when she uses the term "silent land" for eternal life she may be referring to her Calvinist belief in predestination which John Calvin himself summarized by saying, "We call predestination God's eternal decree, by which he determined within himself what he willed to become of each man. For all are not created in equal condition; rather, eternal life is foreordained for some, eternal damnation for others" (Institutes 3. 21. 5). . She may have said"silent land" instead of heaven or hell because she did not know which eternal life she was going to reside in. The theme and simple language work together with the rhyme scheme, abbaabbacddece, work together to make the sonnet pleasant-sounding. I think the beauty of this sonnet is that it is both simple, in language and word choice, and complex, in idea, at the same time without being too overwhelming to the reader. I think the reader finds this sonnet easily applicable to his or her own lives, making it a universally likable reading. I think that Rossetti wrote this sonnet to teach all who read it that death is inevitable, but it should not consume the lives of those who are left living. She wrote this sonnet to her lover that he should not be upset if, after she died, he forgot about her because she would rather know that he is happy than that he is, in a sense, dead while alive. We should all apply this message to our lives because it is truly the best way to deal with the death of one we love. beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102899117870718523.post-18625256042922970052020-03-06T15:48:00.001-08:002020-03-06T15:48:03.159-08:00Affirmative action debate essaysAffirmative action debate essays When they were first initiated, affirmative action policies were needed to address the discrimination faced by women and members of minority ethnic groups. These policies have enabled many people to secure better employment and educational opportunities. In their wake, however, affirmative action policies have also spawned criticisms of reverse discrimination, and given rise to charges that in the long run, these policies harm the people they were intended to help. This paper argues that while affirmative action policies were necessary in 1965, they are no longer appropriate in 2003. In fact, this paper presents arguments why affirmative action policies are ineffective in addressing the discrimination problems faced by African Americans, Latinos 1. Race is not a sharply-defined category. Many critics of affirmative action point to the problem of "racial boxing" that these policies inherently promote. Linda Chavez, for example, argues that race categories are arbitrary concepts, which are fluid and This problem is best illustrated in the arbitrary definitions of what constitutes being "Latino" or "Hispanic." An Argentinean person of Spanish ancestry, for example, would most likely be considered "Caucasian." However, if the same person speaks fluent Spanish instead of fluid English, he automatically becomes "Hispanic." Such arbitrary classifications are also at work among other racial groups. All Asians are usually lumped together because of the way they look. Such a catchall category, however glosses over important cultural differences and even makes light of deep-seated cleavages between groups like the Japanese and Koreans. Even Caucasian people of Eastern European descent are asserting their distinctness from other Caucasians. Just as it is impossible to classify who belongs to what ethnic group, it is also virt... beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102899117870718523.post-86970444033323994022020-02-19T07:15:00.001-08:002020-02-19T07:15:03.145-08:00A Shift in the Balance of Power from the USA to China EssayA Shift in the Balance of Power from the USA to China - Essay Example This paper illustrates that while China balances precariously between the free market and an edgy military regime, the nation is surfacing as a formidable contender in the economic sector and an impending challenger for technological advantage. From the benchmark of Tiananmen Square in 1989 well into the first tender years of the Twenty-first Century, many in the West continue to view China with unease and distrust. From the appalling crackdown on the visionary expectation of the ardent student protesters some16 years ago to the subsequent repression of all political dissidence, Communist leaders have time and again tended to reassert a blind obeisance to a dogged system of harsh and mechanical one-party rule. Equally alarming is the ostentatious display of military power in response to Taiwanese aspirations for independence over the last two decades, along with the troubling detection of furtive deliveries of military know-how to unstable areas in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, and South Asia. These measures scarcely serve to improve international confidence in the Chinese bid for a responsible position on the world stage of the new century. Admittedly China has recently begun to evince a new, less menacing and forward-looking stance toward proving itself as a responsible collaborator in global interaction as the nation begins to assume a substantial position in the world economy. By assisting in negotiations on the Korean Peninsula, China, in effect, was able to take advantage of her influence in the region in the service of broader international concerns. Domestically, the Peoples Republic of China has taken steps to free a token number of leading political dissidents in response to Western appeals, and, in diverse rural villages, elections for local leaders have been authorized. Chinese rulers also seem to be dealing moderately with the lately re-annexed regions of Hong Kong and Macau, and so far seem to be restricting intimidation tactics to verbal pos turing and a display of military muscle in response to Taiwanese desires for independence.à beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102899117870718523.post-49328033863725868852020-02-04T05:58:00.001-08:002020-02-04T05:58:02.891-08:00Interracial Marriages As Phenomenon In Modern Society EssayInterracial Marriages As Phenomenon In Modern Society - Essay Example Landry has spent five years with the African American husband who was her college fellow. After the divorce, she married the Caucasian husband and has been living with him for four years. When she reflects back upon the two experiences, she realizes that race was never a strong issue. Landry parted ways with her ex-husband because there was the communication gap between them and he was disloyal to her. Besides, they had issues related to money. Therefore, when Landry searched for a husband the second time, she placed more emphasis upon his commitment towards budget and his tendency to exchange views frequently and maintain loyalty to her in marriage than the race he belonged to. Landry spent twelve years as a single after her divorce. In those years, she spent time with numerous men from different ethnic origins. Having dated men of different professions and racial backgrounds, Landry reached the conclusion that two peopleââ¬â¢s resemblance in the level of intelligence, personal i nterests, aspirations, and values were much stronger determinants of their compatibility with each other than race could ever be. Landry has evaluated the potential advantages and disadvantages of interracial marriages in this article. Discussing the pros of interracial marriages, Landry first discusses personal growth. The successful marriage requires the partners to grow together with the passage of time. Marital partners can enhance their growth by sharing with each other and appreciating the challenges arising from their cultural and racial differences. Landry has noticed that her Caucasian husbandââ¬â¢s behavior is changed for the better after marrying her. He has started to understand how people of color may feel like strangers in settings where the others donââ¬â¢t look like them. He had a new experience of going to church with an African American wife as a lone white man. beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102899117870718523.post-8548343875445140532020-01-27T02:22:00.001-08:002020-01-27T02:22:04.416-08:00Media Ecology And The Matrix Film Studies EssayMedia Ecology And The Matrix Film Studies Essay This report is based on Matrix movie. The Matrix movie is a science fiction-action film which was released in America on March 31, 1999.This film written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski.it is the first part of Matrix series, not even movie also the part of comic book, video games and animation. The meaning of matrix is a rectangular array of matrix. In this movie its shows there is two different lives, one is computer generated world dream world and another is real, but all human living in dream word which is programed and none of them know. In this movie Neo is a hero and he is a computer programmer and he drawn into a rebellion against the machines. But first he wanted to know what is matrix. Morpheus is main character of this movie and he spends much time on matrix to find, and he also help other to find it. He is the caption of their team in their spaceship which they called Nebuchadnezzar. They always go to dream world and come back with hacked telephone line; it is only the safe exit from the matrix. In other side in dream world a group of Agent which is known as swat team. They want to kill the entire human, so they want to catch the Morpheus. Because he is the only person who knows all the matrix code to go back to their ship throw phone. When they catch the Morpheus then Neo come and save him from him. Discussion There are few issue and theories which are applied on them are following. Media Ecology :- The effect of media on human being throw the perception feeling, understanding etc. and its change our thinking feeling and behaving system. Main source of media are TV, film, radio, mobile, books. Issues raised in the movies are:- Movie seen : In this movie when Agent behind the Trinity to kill, then she ask for help from tank by her cell phone then Tank call on a local STD, when she picked up the phone then she reached at their real world from dream world (Programmed world) in form of matrix. Answer: -Matrix movie is fully based on media ecology. In this movie telephone is used as in the form of media ecology. They used it to communicate and to move from move real to virtual or virtual to real word. Telephone decreased the way difference between both lives and makes it a global village. Virtual word is the hot media in this movie because it programed world and caring huge amount of data and telephone is cold media. In this movie they are using number computer screens to read the matrix. Script from movie: -as example The ship is quiet and dark. Everyone is asleep IN MAIN DECK The core glows with monitor light. Cypher is in the Operators chair as Neo cones up behind him. CYPHER Whoa! Shit, Neo, you scared me. NEO Sorry. CYPHER Midnight watches. Neos eyes light up as he steps closer to the screens That seems alive with a constant flow of data. NEO It is The Matrix? CYPHER Yeah.it is The Matrix. Answer: -In this script you can read that neo talking about computer screens to read the information, computer show some data to which have their own value which is called matrix. Computer becomes a medium for cypher in this example and data become its information and in other words these tools make more extension for them. Cognitive dissonance :- The uncomfortable feeling which is caused by double minded situation, and hard to decided which the person already done is good or not. When Neo become a part of their team they he start meeting to team members. When he meets the cypher, then cypher say: Cypher: I know you thinking same but I am thinking. Neo: what I am thinking? Cypher: why I not choose the blue pill, I want to go back in dream world and I am tired from this life ruled fully life. But Morpheus say it our real word. Answer: This theory is easily applied on Cypher, because first he decided to come in this world but now he wants to go back in virtual (programmed) world. He is double minded and feeling uncomfortable. In this line you can easy understand his feeling, action, behaviour and beliefs are out of harmony and other cause of this is his belief or exception is more than what he got, which is the main reason he feeling uncomfortable and thinking he choose wrong decision and choose red pill. Social penetration theory: It is also known as onion theory, it means it is referred in terms of breath and depth and every layer is show the human behaviour according to its breadth and depth. For example, how we are close to a person, its decrease the layer of personal information of that person for us. Answer: This theory is applied on the relationship of Neo and trinity. First Trinity and Neo was not known to each other closely, it is same like a Onion based example , when she start known about Neo and start come closer, then the interpersonal layers in start decreasing for Trinity and then she feel that he is the one and fall in love with Neo. Here is the script of movie which shows feeling of trinity about Neo. TRINITY Neo, I have to tell you something. I dont know what it means or even If it matters but I feel I have to say it. Ive never told anyone this before. I think Ive been afraid to. When I went to the Oracle, she told me she told me that I would meet A man. And that I would fall in Love Social identity: At the end part of movie when there is a fighting between Neo and agents. Agents catch the neo and kill him by gun but after some time Neo open his eyes and stand up and start fighting again and when again Agents try to shoot him then Neo stop all the bullets in air. Answer: In this part of movie when he was killed, at that movement he was fighting like a normal human and was not who he is. But when he starts thinking about the difference between real human and programmed created world and start compare agents and him. He finds his social identity. His social identity is he is the one in movie who can control his mind the see the difference between real and programed world. Conclusion This movie is a science based fiction-Action movie and media ecology is big part of this movie. Telephone and computer screen are both are the medium of source of information. They contact to each other through the cell phone and they travel on both worlds with telephone exception and all the information they got like position, way to go out from building are they got from computer screen in the form of matrix. So these are the tool of they use which are based on media ecology. Cypher is a character of this movie who feel uncomfortable because he want to go back in virtual world and thinking he choose wrong option so Cognitive dissonance theory is full applied on Cypher. According to social penetration theory human are like the onion, they have layers one after one as breadth and depth. It is same like how much you know a person, layer are start decreases and person start to come close to you same like the character of movie Trinity and Neo. Social identity is also applied on Neo in this movie because he finds his own personality, who he is and he got the difference between his and agents. Referencing Griffin, E. (2006). The root is at the top level of Linuxââ¬â¢s user hierarchy and has all the privileges to access all resources. To login as root, a user must use the command su username. After pressing the ENTER key, the system will prompt the user to type in the corresponding password. After entering the correct password, the user will inherit full access privileges including the right to modify other userââ¬â¢s account information. Attempting to enter the correct password will deny the user from inheriting the rootââ¬â¢s privileges. # su ââ¬â [screenshot] Let us now attempt to create a new user called ââ¬Ëbozoââ¬â¢. But first, let us check if that username is not yet taken. # id bozo [screenshot] Since username bozo is still available we can now create his user account. # useradd bozo -d /home/bozo -u 600 We have just created a username called bozo and makes his default folder under /home/bozo and gave him the UID of 600. by the way, UIDââ¬â¢s are unique identifiers of users. Users can be a representation of both human users and services running in the Linux system. UIDââ¬â¢s are used by Linux in relation to his password and privilege information stored in the /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and /etc/group. One of the very first thing Linux does when creating a new user is to copy the files from the skeleton folder, which contains whatever files the admin wants to give to new users, into the newly created userââ¬â¢s folder. Now, let us try to take a look at those files by displaying a detailed listing of files including hidden ones. # ls ââ¬âla /home/skel/ So far so good. Now let us try creating another user and call her bozoette. # useradd bozo -d /home/bozo -u 600 We had an error. As stated earlier, UIDââ¬â¢s are unique. Since we attempted to create a user and assigned the same UID with bozo, the system denied our request. But what if we do want give bozoete the UID #600? One of the many ways to do it is to first change bozoââ¬â¢s UID, say 601 and then create bozoetteââ¬â¢s user account using the newly-vacant UID of 600. Change bozoââ¬â¢s UID from 600 to 601. # id bozo # usermod -u 601 bozo # id bozo Then create bozoetteââ¬â¢s new account with UID 600. # useradd bozoette -d /home/bozoette -u 600 Now we have two new users bozo(uid:601) and bozoette(uid:600) with user directories /home/bozo and /home/bozoette, respectively. Note that user accounts remain inactive until a password is assigned to them. Let us now activate the two new user accounts by assigning passwords to them. # passwd bozo # passwd bozoette Users bozo and bozoette are now active and users can now login to the system using the correct username and password combinations for the accounts. This article is effective for the internal assessment because it does not dive into the economic theory, but introduces many notions that can easily be absorbed into economic presumptions and then be analysed. The extract portrays about how the advantages and disadvantages of using pollution permits, how effective they are and how several European companies are learning to deal with the more stringent regulations of the EU on pollution as a result of global warming. Pollution permits, are certain amounts of CO2 which are allowed to be emitted by companies in during production. These are given out by the respective governments to the companies, who can also purchase further permits from other companies who don't need all their permission to pollute. 2 The draft proposal which will require all flights arriving or departing from EU airports to buy permits to cover their carbon dioxide emissions, will be presented just before Christmas, and is crucial to the community's fight against global warning and climate change. The E. U. has incorporated pollution permits, in order to curb carbon gas emission, and slow down global warming, forcing international airlines to pay for the negative externalities they are causing during production. This means that the trans-national airlines have to pay for the vertical distance between SMC and PMC, so that they are paying the expenditure the society would normally have to sacrifice for, which can be seen in Figure 1. , before the European Unions incorporation of pollution permits: Fig 1. 1: Before the Introduction of Pollution permits Figure 1. 2: After the Introduction of Pollution permits Figure 1. 1 shows the situation clearly before the pollution permits were introduced by the European Union draft proposal. The problem undoubtedly being that the market was experiencing failure, as the global airline firms did not have to pay the cost they were causing the society by their carbon gas emissions. In Figure 1. , the Private Marginal Cost (PMC) has shifted into the same position as the Social Marginal Cost (SMC) 3 was in Figure 1. 1, as now the Airliners have to pay for the negative externalities they are causing, consequently leaving the society left without having to pay for the pollution the aircraft caused, and the negative externality being pollution, abolished. Also, the Private Marginal Cost has become sharper, as the company must now compensations in case it exceeds a certain amount of carbon gas emissions. This is an incentive for the company to either produce less or produce more eco-friendly. As a result, Figure 1. 3 will arise, as the respective Airline Firm is now producing eco-friendly, and will not exceed the limits on its carbon gas emissions, furthermore will even be able to sell some of its excess pollution permits, to other firms who need surplus to cover their pollution. Fig 1. 3: During the Introduction of Pollution permits: The problem is that it does not happen like this, and that in fact the limits on the emissions are far too large for there to be any effect, and David Henderson from the Association of European Airlines (AEA), ââ¬Å"We could see another trade war,â⬠cited stiff opposition from the US several years ago against European plans aimed at reducing jet engine noise. A possible solution to the continuing problem would be further stringent regulations by the E. U. , and possibly a solid example are, the airline emission controls would come under already existing European emissions trading scheme (ETS), which was launched in ââ¬Å"2005 as the cornerstone of EU efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. â⬠4 An evaluation of the economic theory shows that the idea behind the pollution permits is very good, and that there are some advantages of using it in real-life. However, it does not work as smoothly as was initially planned. For one, international airline firms are able to evade paying for the pollution permits, by moving production to developing economies outside the E. U. , who don't have any regulations on the carbon gas emissions. The effects of this are that they pollute excessively in the new production environment, which has exactly the opposite effect to the desired one. This of course, shows that many alterations need to be undertaken for the European Commission draft proposal's requirement of all flights arriving at or departing from EU airports to buy permits for their carbon dioxide emissions to work effectively. The E. U. will have to alter their plan slightly, which should be made more rigorous and binding to produce the desired plan, which is the slowing down of global warming, but also to combat the endless possibilities of negative externalities. beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102899117870718523.post-6221099150509483342020-01-02T15:32:00.001-08:002020-01-02T15:32:03.372-08:00Definition Of Functional Level Strategies - 1083 Words Questions on Chapter 4 1. African-American slaves in the early American world had to endure and struggle through some of the most gruesome punishments and on occasion, it was for no reason at all. In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass displays some occasions where he, even as a young boy, was subjected to some of these terrible events. Douglass plays on the pathos of his readers right from the beginning by tugging at our emotions with the story of his Aunt Hester. Does Douglass portray his violence to be over the top? Some might say yes, but even if itââ¬â¢s over the top, it is because itââ¬â¢s accurate. Some punishments that the slaves endured were whipping, hanging, beating, burning, branding, shackling and imprisonment (Boundless). Many of the plantations that housed slaves used these forms of brutality. Slaves could earn a one-way ticket to a punishment by trying to run away, a form of disobedience or s ometimes just because their master felt like it. One of the most violent forms of these brutal acts was the whipping. When a slave is whipped, they are literally stripped of their clothes and dignity and flogged with a rope, piece of leather or even cow skin with prongs. Depending on the slave master, the number of lashes changes. However, some masters just decide to whip until they grow tired or fatigued. Answer: Introduction Ten hotel chains have come together to build a consortium of hotels namely StayTogether to counter the opposition being faced by online booking websites. These websites are namely hotels.com, booking.com etc. They have done this to combat the pressure from the market in terms of hotel accommodation being provided at low prices. This merged entity has more than a thousand hotels in almost all categories of hotels within itself. The categories includes the luxurious suites, bed and breakfast arrangements, backpacker, romantic honeymoon suites etc. The presence of these hotels are around the world. The image of the hotels are going down due to high cost being kept by them. Since, there are many options available at these online sites at low prices, peoples thinking about these hotel chains have gone down. Similarly, their profit has taken nosedive. Aa will be taking several steps to combat these issues (Ivanov, 2015). They will be creating a one stop website for bookings, queries, custo mer care etc. Also, mobile apps will be developed to offer similar facilities through smartphones. Along with these, several marketing plans and promotions will be in line to promote the facilities offered by aa throughout all parts of the world. Internet has taken everything by storm. The revolution came to all the industry in the world. All the players in the industries have changes their way of operations. In the following sections, we will see the issues being faced by traditional hotel chains upon the advent of modern online booking websites. We will also try to figure out solutions that the companies can use to combat with these online websites. The promotions that they can carry out in mass media to attract new and existing customers and the strategies that can be formulated and implemented to ensure revival of the tourism sectors traditional players (Haynes, 2015). Issues faced by the Hotels The hotels today have lot of things to cater to provide customer satisfaction. The customer satisfaction is the most important thing in todays world. The satisfaction will be achieved only when the customers will get all the facilities in a competitive price segment. The customers have reached a stage where they compare everything online and then select the one which is providing all the required facilities at the minimum cost. The hotels are ramping up the facilities that they are providing to the customers. These will enable them to cope up with the competition. The competition has become fierce and the hotels are trying their best to compete with others (Hsu, 2015). The main issue at hand is the presence of online booking mediums which are draining the profit margins of the hotel chains. As discussed in the previous section, a group of 10 hotel chains have come together and formed a merged entity aa which will compete with the online counterparts. The online booking websites have tied up with the local low budget hotels and are offering all booking cum customer services to the consumers. The booking websites are making use of technology and are becoming the mediator in between the hotels and the customers (Ladhari, 2015). The customers are getting a platform to check all the facilities offered by the different segments of hotels along with the charges for booking the room. This has left no scope for the traditional chain of hotels whose online presence is negligible. The online websites can offer lot of discounts since they are startups and some venture capitalists must have funded them. The funding by VCs is generally high which help the startups to do lot of marketing activities and provide lots of offers and discounts to them (Lee, 2013). The way of doing business is important for startups and these startups play a huge role in offsetting the business in the industry. The industry can be shaken up with the discounts offered by the startups. For example, a new entrant in Indian Telecom Industry named Jio infocomm. Has disrupted the telecom industry in India by offering free Voice and Data services to the users at a very nominal charge. The other players had to lower down the prices and got impacted a lot in terms of revenues and profits. The same is happening in this case with online booking services are providing huge discounts and ease of booking to the customers (Beritelli, 2016). The customers are getting attracted towards the new entrant thereby shying away from the old traditional hotel chains. The hotel chains had a good brand image before. They still have it. But, the price at which they are providing the bookings is a bit high. Due to this, the customers are going for low budget hotels (Cantallops, 2014). These low budget hotels provide all the services (may be a bit less quality service) and are charging less for the bookings. The main issue of the traditional hotel chains is to combat against these low-cost hotels via the online booking sites. The spending of the traditional hotel chain on the infrastructure and the cost of having good quality staffs is also high. Their spending has choked them to give further discounts. Lot of other infrastructure work is also in the pipeline. This work has been thought of adding to the luxury that the hotel chains provide to their customers (Ling, 2014). However, all the new spending has been put on hold now by the hotels. The hotel managers have now come together to fight with these online counterparts so that a balance can be achieved in online and retail segments. The aa has been formed taking the same into consideration. The new entity has been thought to provide a seamless service to its customers. The customers need to be made aware of the new developments (Ozturk, 2016). These will be covered in the below sections. The upcoming sections will cover the ways and strategies in which the company can change its ways of operations which will be focused towards countering the online book ing sites. The marketing and promotions strategies which will be implemented to attract customers will also be focused upon in the below sections. Strategies to counter the issues The hotels need to take a lot of steps to counter the issues that they are facing. One of the primary step has already been taken by them by forming aa. The aa is aimed to provide customer good services across the world at reasonable prices. The network of the hotel chain when combined is very wide. They must make use of this wide network (Liu, 2014). There are some 1000 hotels under these 10 hotel chains spread across all geographical areas. The people will be amazed to become a part of this consortium and avail the benefits for lifetime, if they are provided with options. The options need to be formulated by the management of all the hotel chains and a unanimous decision will help in going ahead. The market share of these hotel chains is decreasing now. The decrease in the market share is a result of the decrease in the number of bookings by the customers. The lesser bookings are leading to lesser revenues while the fixed costs are same. This is creating havoc for the hotel chains and many of them already started to panic. The market share can be increased with the brand awareness of aa among the customers. This will be covered in the coming section. The new investments which were discussed in the previous section will be put on hold and the investments will be directed towards the discounts and promotions which need to be provided to the customers (Ozturk, 2017). The people have a lot of expectations for the new entity aa and they will love to hear good packages and plans from aa. The quality of the services being provided by aa will be of top quality. There would be no compromise in terms of quality. This will become a differentiating factor for the business and customers who require good quality to be loyal to aa. The aa will also like to target the customers who likes top quality hotels because through them, the revenue will also be good since people can pay extra for that quality factor (Standing, 2014). The quality of the aa will determine the increase in the market share for the entity. It will help in retaining the old customers and will also make way for new customers to try the luxurious offerings by aa. The offerings of aa will be discussed in the upcoming section. The people want good quality services at reasonable prices. The term good quality differs from person to person. A person can think the low budget hotel also provides good quality whereas a rich individual who has the capacity to afford big hotels will choose big hotels to get good quality services. Everything is a game of perception. The individual perception makes a hotel good or bad. The money charged for the room bookings try to make the person biased about the quality. This happens a lot of time. People with a neutral midframe will act differently when subjected to certain terms and conditions (Richard, 2017). In the next section, we will see certain marketing strategic and promotional plans which will take the aa to new heights. Marketing Plans and Strategies A company does marketing to make the people aware about its new launch or about the services that it provides. The cost associated with marketing is huge and hence proper plan needs to be made before executing the strategies. The marketing team will work closely with the operations manager of the hotels so that they can create a full proof marketing plan. The plans need to be created, evaluated by subject matter experts and then it should be implemented in the reality (Wang, 2016). The marketing activities will primarily include the creation of well-defined marketing scope. This scope will lead to a plan. The scope of the aa will be to offer good quality services and good discounts. The companies will be able to plan a draft strategy to cover all the requirements. The promotions will include discounts in packages provided by aa. Aa can come up with certain packages like lifetime membership package or periodic package like summer package or winter package etc. These packages will be provided with less discounts to the customers. The customers will be attracted by the aa with these new offers provided to them. The discounts in the package will be calculated after the costing of all parameters are done. The aa will not go into losses just to offer good discounts. It needs to maintain its quality services and for that revenues and profits are equally important. The profits should increase with time. The advantages of taking long length bundle to the clients will be the hazard free reserving whenever in the year at any inn inside the gathering they need. This is a decent choice (Yang, 2014). Alongside this, the STAYTOGETHER has thought of STAYTOGETHER Loyalty services which will offer prizes to the returning clients as airplane terminal exchanges of stopping offices or additional night appointments. Additionally, visitors can take benefit of feasts if any standard eatery/kitchen is accessible inside the lodging. The selective eateries will be charged additional. Tie ups have been made with specific aircrafts and discount will be given in room cost to the clients who are getting through those carriers. Free suppers can be gotten with the utilization of certain charge cards. Every one of these advantages will encourage the STAYTOGETHER to recover its lost piece of the pie and pull in numerous new clients. Aside from the above offers, the STAYTOGETHER will have some in-application rebates for the individuals who are reserving the rooms through their cell phones. These will be far beyond the current rebates. The lodging networks can put resources into these advertising plans for a timeframe to recover their lost name and afterward they can change the advancements to suit at future point in time. In this manner, promoting viably and with appropriate arrangements will help STAYTOGETHER to rise as a victor among the kindred online partners. Conclusion The hotel chains must take into consideration the above steps to cater to the customers. The satisfaction of the customers will determine the future of aa. In the above sections, we saw the issues being faced by traditional hotel chains upon the advent of modern online booking websites. We also tried to figure out solutions that the companies can use to combat with these online websites. The promotions that they can carry out in mass media to attract new and existing customers and the strategies that can be formulated and implemented to ensure revival of the tourism sectors traditional players were also figured out. The hotel chains formed the merged entity aa. This merged entity has more than a thousand hotels in almost all categories of hotels within itself. The categories include the luxurious suites, bed and breakfast arrangements, backpacker, romantic honeymoon suites etc. The presence of these hotels is around the world. The image of the hotels is going down due to high cost being kept by them. Since, there are many options available at these online sites at low prices, peoples thinking about these hotel chains have gone down. Similarly, their profit has taken nosedive. Aa will be taking several steps as discussed in the above sections to combat these issues. References Ivanov, S., Stoilova, E., Illum, S. F. (2015). There are many theories as to why the witch trials came about, the most popular of which the girls' suppressed childhood. However, there were other factors as well, such as Abigail Williams' affair with John Proctor, the secret grudges that neighbors held against each other, and the physical and economic differences between the citizens of Salem Village. From a historical viewpoint, it is known that young girls in colonial Massachusetts were given little or no freedom to act like children. They were expected to walk straight, arms by their sides, eyes slightly downcast, and their mouths were to be shut unless otherwise asked to speak. It is not surprising that the girls would find this type of lifestyle very constricting. To rebel against it, they played pranks, such as dancing in the woods, listening to slaves' magic stories and pretending that other villagers were bewitching them. The Crucible starts after the girls in the village have been caught dancing in the woods. As one of them falls sick, rumors start to fly that there is witchcraft going on in the woods, and that the sick girl is bewitched. Once the girls talk to each other, they become more and more frightened of being accused as witch, so Abigail starts accusing others of practicing witchcraft. The other girls all join in so that the blame will not be placed on them. In T he Crucible, Abigail starts the accusations by saying, I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil! Another girl, Betty, continues the cry with, I saw George Jacobs with the Devil! I saw Goody Howe with the Devil! From here on, the accusations grow and grow until the jails overflow with accused witches. It must have given them an incredible sense of power when the whole town of Salem listened to their words and believed each and every accusation. After all, children were to be seen and not heard in Puritan society, and the newfound attention was probably overwhelming. In Act Three of The Crucible, the girls were called before the judges to defend themselves against the claims that they were only acting. To prove their innocence, Abigail led the other girls in a chilling scene. Abby acted as if Mary Warren sent her spirit up to the rafters and began to talk to the spirit. Oh Mary, this is a black art to change your shape. No, I cannot, I cannot stop my mouth; it's God's work I do. The other girls all stared at the rafters in horror and began to repeat everything they heard. Finally, the girls' hysterics caused Mary Warren to accuse John Proctor of witchcraft. Once the scam started, it was too late to stop, and the snowballing effect of wild accusations soon resulted in the hanging of many innocents. After the wave of accusations began, grudges began to surface in the community. Small slights were made out to be witchcraft, and bad business deals were blamed on witchery. Two characters in The Crucible, Giles Corey and Thomas Putnam, argue early on a bout a plot of land. Corey claims that he bought it from Goody Nurse but Putnam says he owns it, and Goody Nurse had no right to sell it. Later, when Putnam's daughter accuses George Jacobs of witchery, Corey claims that Putnam only wants Jacobs' land. Giles says, If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property - that's law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land! Others also had hidden motives for accusing their neighbors. Once the accusations began, everyone had a reason to accuse someone else as bewitched; therefore it is why the hangings got so out of hand. Apparently, she never heard of the old saying, ââ¬Å"The customer is always right.â⬠2 It all started in May when I returned the DooDad Plus to your ââ¬Å"customer serviceâ⬠department because it was missing a part. (I donââ¬â¢t suppose that you have ever tried to assemble a DooDad Plus, but it just canââ¬â¢t be done without all the parts.) This guy in customer service was not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he spent about half an hour tapping on his computer and eventually told me that the missing part should arrive from the warehouse in three to five days. Three to five days- sure.3 Here it is July, and the thing still hasnââ¬â¢t shown up. The summer is half over, and I still havenââ¬â¢t had a chance to use my DooDad Plus. Iââ¬â¢ve been down to your ââ¬Å"customer serviceâ⬠department about a million times over the past two months, and every time somebody taps on the computer and smiles and says the missing part is ââ¬Å"en route from the warehouse.â⬠Where in tarnation is this warehouse- Kandahar?4 So today I went down to your so-called store and dragged the so-called manager out of her coffee break to explain that I was giving up. All I wanted was my money back. (Besides, it turns out that I can get a DooDad Plus from Loweââ¬â¢s for ten bucks less than what I paid you. Ha!) So what does this lady tell me? That itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"against store policyâ⬠to refund my money because I had already opened the package and started assembling the DooDad!5 This is insane! There is no denying the fact that everyday Muslims in the West are marginalized for the actions of a few extremist groups. It is an established however grave reality that in the present day world, more and more people are losing their patience with religions and all the vivacious debates that come along with them. People are tired of listening to animated critics arguing among themselves on whose religion is better than whom and do not care much about what is the reality of each major religion in this age of fierce competitiveness and materialism. Even the Western countries today cannot be called primarily Christian countries because the majority is composed of secular people leaning towards atheism. In such circumstances, it has become substantially hard for practicing Muslims living in the West to convey their message, fears, concerns, and requirements to largely unresponsive and nonchalant non-Muslim majorities. It is virtually impossible for them to get significantly unreligious non-Muslims to pay attention to the obstacles encountered by them let alone remake their minds about Islam. It is not just following 9/11, but long before that sorry incident Muslims in the Western countries have remained victims of unjustified aggression. However, it is true that western aggression and intolerance picked momentum after the 9/11 attacks and the rate of issues targeting innocent Muslims reached its climax. Despite many empty arguments put forward by prominent Western politicians that their problem is not with Islam, truth is that practicing Muslims are more under attack than non-practicing Muslims. Hijab is a highly sacred Islamic practice for Muslim women and the rou tine adamant Western contempt and criticism for this practice is highly objectionable.à beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102899117870718523.post-87481193729274027092019-11-19T16:01:00.001-08:002019-11-19T16:01:03.147-08:00Human Resources Management - Stress in Work force and the Employee EssayHuman Resources Management - Stress in Work force and the Employee Assistance Program - Essay Example Keeping in view the present economic situation in mind different surveys carried out find the worry of money as the prime cause for such states of the employees. People, especially the less hiring of human resource people have arisen as a result more work is required from the limited people. This has in turn caused frustration in the employees and a lot of them have started seeing counselors. Increased work load by the firms and their expectation regarding the work to be picture perfect has led to increased absenteeism and affected the employees psychologically. (Merkle, Judith A.) The term work-more economy is what is being applied these days describing the working conditions in the firms. Further, the employees do not want to spoil their relation with their employers for again the fear of losing the job. The reputation, productivity, working environment, employee and employer relation has all been drastically changed owing to the pressure cooker type environment due to recession. It is always expected that any student will experience sleepless nights due to endless exams, reports and papers. To cope with these hectic schedules, a lot of students are looking for ways to help them stay active and awake. One of the most common way students resort to is to drink beverages. Many beverages are helpful in making students stay awake and active during studying. Carbonated drinks, energy drinks, caffeinated drinks, alcoholic drinks, and water are the beverages most commonly consumed by students. With regards to these concerns, a study was conducted to determine the choice of beverage of students and to know the reasons why they drink the beverage of their choice. Though others might say that beverages such as carbonated, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks can be harmful to our human body, it can also be helpful to students especially when they were studying. These beverages are very helpful to students, but we cannot deny the fact that if these are beneficial to the students, beverages such as carbonated, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks have harmful effects as well. It is obvious from the word itself that caffeinated drinks contains drug known as caffeine. It is also found in many different substances such as coffee. Some drinks have little amount of it and others may contain no caffeine at all. Consuming small amount of caffeine may be safe that it could help improve our body to have more energy and to stay focus and contrite well but a large consumption of caffeinated beverages leads to negative effects on the human body (Chloe, 2010). Besides consumption of caffeinated drinks really helps students to ward off sleep and increase alertness when the situation demands us to stay awake or need to have a little sleep. Aside from caffeinated drinks, water can help drive away the feeling of sleepiness. Water is an easy home remedy to stay awake whole night when nothing else is available. Drinking ice-cold water is also beneficial because it is a form of distraction to falling asleep (Nicks, 2011). Moreover, frequent urination that follows with increased water intake can prevent from falling asleep (Nicks, 2011). Some common reasons why people drink are to relax, celebrate and also to relax. Drinking alcoholic drinks is usually not part of the reason to drink in order to stay awake for it contains chemicals that depresses the nervous system (Nicks, 2011). Furthermore, consumption of alcoholic drinks may either be beneficial or harmful to body especially on the brain. Over consumption of alcoholic drinks leads to brain functioning such as loss of intellectual functioning combined with amnesia. In addition to that, alcohol-induced brain damage appears to be partially reversible with abstinence (Institute of Alcohol Studies, 16 July 2007). The choice of beverage also varies with each student depending on what kind of beverages they think could help them in any way. The effect of these beverages to the academic life of each student is very important and has an influence on their choice. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The results of the study will be beneficial to the following: Students. Students will know what beverage can be beneficial with respect to their general weighted average. Manufacturers. Manufactures of the drinks will know if their products are beneficial to the students. Retailers in the dorm area. Product retailers will be able to choose what drink they can sell in the dorm area. Researchers. This will be beneficial to the other researchers for future reference purposes. RESEARCH QUESTIONS a. What is the beverage that students residing in the five UPV Miag-ao dormitories drink the most when studying? b. What is the most important reason why they drink their choice of beverage? c. How satisfied are they with the beverage they consume? d. Is there a linear relationship between their choice of beverage and their general weighted average? e. Is there a linear relationship between their choice of beverage and their general weighted average? OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY a. to determine the proportion of students who drink beverages while studying b. to determine the beverage that students residing in UPV Miag-ao dormitories drink the most while studying c. to determine the reasons why they drink their choice of beverage while studying d. To determine their level of satisfaction with the beverage they drink e. to determine the relationship between their choice of beverage and their general weighted average f. to determine the relationship between the number of times they drink and their choice of beverage general weighted average METHODOLOGY Study Design This is a cross-sectional study of the population to determine the beverages consumed by the students residing in the five UPV Miag-ao dormitories while studying and their effect on the grades of the dormers. Study Population Sample Size. The sample size, calculated based on the current population of the five dormitories of University of the Philippines Visayas Miag-ao, Iloilo, was estimated at 240 individuals comprising 2 strata, Freshmen Dormitories and the Upperclassmen Dormitories, with 110 and 130 individuals per group respectively. When it comes to academic loads, freshmen have almost similar level of loads and the upper class men also have similar level of loads. That is, freshmen have lighter loads and upper class men have heavier loads. Heavier loads means a lot of sleepless nights so upper class men have more reason to drink. When it comes to the general weighted average (GWA), since freshmen have lighter loads, they have a better chance to get higher GWA. This estimated sample size was based on the assumption that no prior estimate of the proportion of individuals whose choice of beverage and their general weighted average (GWA) is known before this survey was planned. Thus, a conservative estimate of the sample size can be obtained by choosing the proportion of what is unknown to be 0. 5. Also, a 5% margin of error was employed in this survey. Sampling Design and Selection of Respondents. The selection of the 240 individuals was based on a stratified random sampling design. First, the population was divided into two strata, the freshmen dormitory residents and the upper class dormitory residents. By proportional allocation, 130 residents from the upper class dormitories and 110 residents from freshmen dormitories were the allocated sizes for each stratum. List of dormitory residents are found in Table A . Survey Instrument The survey instrument consists of 2 parts namely: A. Respondent Characteristics B. Beverage Related Questions Do you drink something while you are studying? What beverage do you usually drink the most while studying? How many times do you drink your choice beverage while studying? What are the three important reasons why you drink the type of beverage you specified in question 2 while studying? How satisfied are you with the beverage you drink? What is your general weighted average last semester? Data Collection A Self-Enumeration method was used to gather information using the questionnaire. English is the language used in the questionnaire. Data were collected from all the 240 respondents in a span of 4 days. Data Processing Data was encoded using SPSS Version 16. 0 (SPSS Inc. 2007). The questionnaire numbers were included in the encoding to easily detect which respondentsââ¬â¢ answers were miscoded. The Analysis of the data, tables and graphs was done using SPSS version 16. 0. Statistical Analysis Some items in the questionnaire were included to measure a specific construct. Frequencies and percentages were used to answer most of the survey objectives. One-Way ANOVA was used to determine significant differences in the general weighted average among groups based on the choice of beverages and the frequency of students drinking their choice of beverage while studying. RESULTS and DISCUSSION Result shows that eighty-seven point nine per cent ( 87. 9%) of the students residing in the five residence halls in UPV Miaga-ao are drinking beverages while studying while twelve point one (12. 1%) per cent are not (see Table 1). Six point two (6. 2%) per cent of the respondents drink carbonated drinks, forty-seven point one (47. 1%) per cent drink caffeinated or energy drinks, one point two (1. 2%) drink alcoholic drinks, twenty eight point three (28. 3%) drink water and five point four (5. 4%)per cent drink other beverages (see Table 2). The three most important reasons why the respondents drink the beverages they prefer are the taste (41. 8%), availability (41. 2%) and the effect in helping them to stay awake (67. 9%) (see Table 3). Other reasons are that the beverage they drink is healthy (22. 5%), drinking is part of their study habit (32. 1%), the affordability (17. 9%), and other specified reasons are the relaxation and the craving on the certain drink. It is shown in Table 4 that students are nearly satisfied with the beverage they drink with mean level of satisfaction equal to 3. 69. There is a significant difference in the mean general weighted average of UPV dormitory residents (F= 2. 5, p=. 031) who are drinking different types of beverages while studying. Table 5 shows that among the dormitory residents who drink the different types of beverages, the ones who drink alcoholic beverages while studying have the highest mean GWA. On the contrary, Table 6 shows that the number of times the residents drink their choice of beverages does not affect their GWA at the end of the semester (F= 1. 473, p=. 2). It means that the GWA of the residents are not affected by the frequency of drinking the beverage of their choice. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS There are more students who drink any of the beverages than not with 87. 9%. Of those 211 students who drink, most of them chose caffeinated and/ or energy drink with 47. 1% and drink chosen the least is the alcoholic drink. Though a few number of students consume alcoholic drinks, they unexpectedly have the highest mean general weighted average. On contrary, the number of times the residents drink their choice of beverage does not affect their general weighted average. Because of the unexpected result in our study, at this point of time, we cannot really recommend that alcoholic drinks are good for studying. But we propose that there should be more future studies to confirm if drinking alcoholic drinks really improves the academic performance of the students. Also, they should add others factors that c Since most of the respondents are drinking caffeinated/energy drinks, we would like to recommend to certain manufacturers of caffeinated/energy drinks that they improve their marketing strategies to gain attention because of the competitions. Companies with known brands should improve their products so that they will not lose their consumers while those unpopular companies must improve their marketing strategies through advertisements and improvements of their products as well. They should also focus on the taste of their product because most of the students prefer the taste of the beverage. Also, because the availability of the product is one of the reasons why students drink caffeinated/energy beverages, we suggest that retailers in the dorm area should sell such drink APPENDIX A TABLES Table A. Complaints that become news events can wear away confidence among an even wider audience. This chapter provides the unique opportunity to combine citizen complaint data with actual observations. It examines the behavior of identified problem officers, as well as whose who are not labeled as such. Systematic research on police misconduct suggests most citizen complaints are generated by a handful of officers. In 1991, the Christopher Commission released its review of the Los Angeles Police Department in the aftermath of the Rodney King riots (Independent Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department, 1991). From its investigation, the Commission reported that a small group of officers were responsible for a disproportionate number of citizen complaints. Forty-four officers who had six or more allegations of excessive force or improper tactics were identified and labeled ââ¬Å"problem officers.â⬠It stands to reason that officers who repeatedly receive citizen complaints will be looked upon with suspicion, reflecting the saying- ââ¬Å"where thereââ¬â¢s smoke thereââ¬â¢s often fire.â⬠Perspectives on Citizen Complaints and Problem Officers As a result of the adversarial nature of the police-citizen relationship, situations arise in which avoidance of conflict is not an option. Not every citizen willingly accepts an officerââ¬â¢s definition of a situation: instead, he or she may choose to rebel against or challenge the authority of the police officer. Van Maanen (1978) noted this type of citizen, termed ââ¬Å"assholeâ⬠by police, was likely to receive street justice in the form of ââ¬Å"thumping.â⬠Though Van Maanenââ¬â¢s fieldwork took place three decades ago, police continue to confront citizens they label as ââ¬Å"assholesâ⬠who challenge their authority (Mastrofski, Reisig, and McCluuskey, 1991). More precisely, ââ¬Å"thumpingâ⬠an ââ¬Å"assholeâ⬠has garnered an increasing amount of both departmental and public attention (Skolnick and Fyfe, 1993). At least three different perspectives on the meaning of citizen complaints are possible. First, it may be that citizen complaints tell us little to nothing because they are unreliable or invalid indicators of officerââ¬â¢s behavior. Two arguments can be made in this resp ect. A citizen complaint is just that- a ââ¬Å"citizenâ⬠complaint. It is the citizenââ¬â¢s view or perception that the officer acted illegally or improperly, which is unlikely to be informed by rules and procedures by police departments establishing uniform operating standards. beckymoren5http://www.blogger.com/profile/09477199864710441767noreply@blogger.com0
